Brian J. Horsch is a Lawrence-based artist focusing on wood-fired ceramics.
He has a BA in Biochemistry from Kansas State University and an OD degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry. He was a founding partner of The EyeDoctors-Optometrists with offices across Northeast Kansas and practiced Optometry for over 30 years.
Brian has been creating hand built and thrown ceramic sculpture since 2008. He tends to focus on human and animal forms both real and unreal. He has a special affinity for farmers, ranchers, and indigenous Midwest critters.
He is represented by art galleries in Lawrence, Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka, and Manhattan, and has work in many private collections. He donates work regularly to various local charities and served on the Lawrence Arts Center Board of Directors from 2009 to 2015.
Many of his pieces are functional with human or animal accents. Prior to his interest in clay, he carved sculptures from various hard woods. His ceramic pieces are fired by electric, gas, or wood at temperatures between 2000 and 2400 degrees F.
He lives close to nature near Stull, Kansas.
